Off the Wall
Explorations in sculptural photography
A conventional photo hangs tidily on he wall. It provides what viewers expect to see: an oblong piece of reality bounded by a frame, a peephole on the world. Of course the photo isn’t really a mirror of objective reality, but an abstraction which reflects the photographer’s point of view — a truth which Cy DeCosse playfully explores in photographs which appear everywhere but on the wall. The photos have escaped from their frames. Instead, photos hang from the ceiling and stretch out on the floor. They invite you to push and touch them and a few even move. Some are whimsical, some are serious. All are interesting.
